Assessing Emotional Capacity in Prospective Adopters, Foster Carers and Special Guardians

Description:

We all agree that adopted and Looked After children need ‘therapeutic’ parents and carers but what does that actually mean? This training day will explore some of the emotional components of therapeutic parenting, and how we might assess whether prospective adopters and carers ‘have what it takes’.

The day will particularly focus on assessing adults’ attachment styles and the implications of problematic adult attachment issues when it comes to parenting traumatised children. It is NOT aimed at assessing readiness to adopt following loss, infertility, bereavement, etc. specifically, but rather at how social workers can become more able to assess the emotional capacity of prospective carers, and how this can be evidenced in Prospective Adopters Reports.

Date: Wednesday 4 June | Time: 10.00am to 4.30pm| Venue: Family Action Head Office, London N1 7GR (fully accessible with lift and wheelchair access ramp)

Who should attend

Social workers and other professionals (such as panel members) working in adoption and permanency.

Please note: Refreshments (tea, coffee, water and biscuits) will be provided. Lunch is NOT provided - you are welcome to bring your own food in and eat at the venue or can buy lunch from the high street on City Road - during the one hour lunch break - which is a short 5 minute walk from the venue. We are not able to provide any parking - the venue is a 10 minute walk from Angel and Old Street Underground Stations (both Northern Line) with lots of bus stops close by.

Participants will learn to:

  1. Get clearer about adult attachment and understand its implications for adopters/ carers and the children they care for.
  2. Learn how to get to know prospective adopters’ and carers’ emotional strengths and vulnerabilities despite the constraints of the current process and timescales.
  3. Increase your confidence in working with the emotions.
  4. Improve your ability to evidence your assessments of emotional capacity.
